A wire brush attachment for a hand drill cuts the time in half and gives the slate a clean surface in no time. Remove a piece of tile from the solution. In this video i use muriatic acid diluted with water to remove dried mortar from ceramic tile. A wire brush can be used to scrub away dried mortar from the area but that can take quite some time if you do it by hand.

How to remove mortar from old tiles for reuse. Don your protective gear and fill your container with at least 5 gallons of water. This is for minor mortar stains. Pay special attention to areas that may have excess mortar such as grout lines on a tile floor and grout joints on a tiled backer board.

Add 1 cup of muriatic acid to the container and stir it. Make sure to apply pressure to the areas with the thickest layer of thin set. When the job of removing dried mortar seems more involved there are a few tools you should consider using. Spray the area with the vinegar and wipe down with the sponge.
